The researcher saving Lake Tana
Dr. Ayalew is the director of Lake Tana Protection Agency. We met him in his office to discuss about the issue of water hyacinths. His holistic approach on the issue made our exchange highly formative.
If we want to eradicate the weed, removing it is not enough. We need to tackle the problem at source. If the afflux of nitrates, phosphates and soil sediments is not stopped, the weed will regenerate the next year.
This comprehensive vision associates the harvest of the hyacinth with the necessity to find solutions in the mountains around Lake Tana.
